October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and every year my sister and I participate in the Liz Hurley 5K Ribbon Run. Liz Hurley is an influential media figure in our community that was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998. Since 1999, the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund has helped increase awareness and raise funds to purchase leading diagnostic technology for Huntsville and Madison Hospitals.
About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. I’m sure everyone knows someone or has been personally affected by breast cancer, and we need to continue to raise awareness for the cause. I encourage every woman to do a monthly examination on herself and women over 35 to have an annual mammogram screening.
I have always enjoyed seeing the town painted pink and everyone gathering to support such a great cause. Let’s all stand together to fight, and remember those we have lost to this horrible disease.
