The first month in 2019 has flown by, and set the tone for a positive and productive year. This year, one of my goals is to become more focused and driven to make healthy choices. One of my friends told me about this New Years Resolution to cut out all alcohol for the month of January, better known as Dryuary. Being the curious person that I am, I accepted the challenge to go one whole month without drinking alcohol, and boy was it an experience.
Days 1-10: I was super pumped to begin the Dryuary challenge and didn’t want to waste any time. I decided to stay in for New Years with my parents, and distance myself from my usual stomping grounds, i.e. the downtown bars. With all this extra time on my hands, I decided to kick it into high gear at the gym and see how much my body could change in a month.
Days 11-20: During this time, I wanted to see how well I would manage going out without drinking. It was hard, I’m not going to lie. Watching everyone else partake in multiple drinks like I normally would while I sipped on my mock tail and resisted the temptation. But, surprisingly my friends didn’t even try to get me to drink and valued my determination. I felt so accomplished knowing that I could still have a good time without being under the influence.
Days 21-31: At this point, I knew I had come too far to give up. Although I struggled when times got stressful at work to not think that having one drink would take the edge off, I maintained my sanity knowing that I am strong and in control of my own body. Even coming up to the last day, the urge to drink alcohol never completely went away, but the benefits and will-power established a great start for a new year.
